Main Varieties and Characteristics of Xinjiang Walnuts

Xinjiang is one of China’s most important walnut-producing regions, renowned for its superior quality, rich flavor, and high nutritional value. This is largely attributed to its unique climatic conditions—ample sunshine, significant temperature variations, and fertile soil—which provide an ideal environment for walnut cultivation. Compared to other major walnut-producing regions in China, Xinjiang walnuts stand out for their large fruit size, full kernels, excellent quality, high yield, and strong resilience.

After nearly 60 years of development, Xinjiang has successfully cultivated several nationally celebrated varieties, including the well-known "185 Walnut," "Xin2 Walnut," "33 Walnut," and "Xingfu Walnut." The three main production areas are the Aksu Prefecture, Kashgar Prefecture, and Hotan Prefecture. Xinjiang walnuts are highly favored by consumers both in China and abroad. Below are some of the major varieties and their notable characteristics:

Main Varieties and Characteristics of Xinjiang Walnuts

185 Walnut
Known as the "King of Thin-Shell Walnuts," the 185 Walnut Inshell features an extremely thin shell that can be easily cracked by hand. Also referred to as "Wen 185," it is a nationally recognized product with distinctive Chinese characteristics. This variety is large in size with an exceptionally thin shell, averaging only 0.6–1.09 mm in thickness, making it easy to break with a gentle squeeze. Its kernel yield is remarkably high—while ordinary walnuts offer around 50%, the 185 Walnut achieves 60%–70%. The kernels are plump, light in color, and have a delicate, sweet taste without any bitterness. They are rich in aroma and contain up to 75% oil content. Due to their high kernel yield and abundance of unsaturated fatty acids, they are widely favored for fresh consumption and premium gift packaging. Additionally, they are rich in protein, unsaturated fatty acids (such as linoleic acid), vitamin E, calcium, phosphorus, and other essential minerals.

Xin2 Walnut
The Xin2 walnut is a high-yield, disease-resistant variety developed specifically for Xinjiang’s growing conditions. It has a moderate shell thickness and offers plump, golden-yellow kernels. This variety is especially suitable for large-scale cultivation and is widely used in food processing, such as walnut oil and baked goods.

Xingfu Walnuts
Often sold under the brand “Xingfu” (meaning “happiness”), these walnuts are typically selected from premium Xinjiang varieties, emphasizing consistent size, attractive appearance, and a crisp texture. They are commonly packaged as shelled or ready-to-eat kernels, ideal for family consumption and health-conscious consumers.

33 Walnut Inshell

The 33 variety is recognized for its balanced shell thickness—neither too hard nor too fragile—making it easy to process and store. Its kernels are known for their rich aroma and slightly oily texture, suitable for both raw eating and culinary uses. It is a reliable choice for commercial supply and retail markets.
