Yecheng Walnut Harvest in Full Swing: 640,000 Mu of Premium Xingfu Walnuts Enter Picking Season
According to reports from China National Radio’s Yecheng branch, the 640,000 mu (approximately 42,667 hectares) of walnut orchards in Yecheng County, Xinjiang, have officially entered the harvesting season. In recent years, following a development strategy of “stabilizing acreage, improving quality, and increasing efficiency,” Yecheng has been transforming its walnut resources into economic advantages, driving rural revitalization. More than 300,000 local farmers have achieved steady income growth through planting, maintaining, processing, and selling walnuts across the county’s vast walnut plantations.
These days, farmers across Yecheng’s townships are busy harvesting walnuts, with orchards showcasing a bustling and fruitful scene. Heliqimu · Keremula, a villager from Heyuan Town, Yecheng County, shared: “We’ve been growing walnuts for many years and have acquired advanced techniques. Both the yield and quality of our walnuts are excellent. This year, we expect a per-mu yield of over 300 kg. The variety we grow is Xingfu Walnut. At the current market price of 12 RMB per kilogram for dry shelled walnuts, my five mu of land can generate an income of around 18,000 RMB. I will continue working hard to cultivate high-quality walnuts to increase my income and improve my life.”
Rural revitalization begins with industrial development. Leveraging its advantageous conditions for walnut cultivation, Yecheng County has guided farmers to expand walnut planting and consistently treated the walnut industry as a key driver of rural income growth. In 2024, the county’s total walnut output reached 147,300 tons, with an estimated output of 150,000 tons in 2025. Per capita income is expected to increase by over 1,000 RMB compared to last year.
Currently, walnuts in Yecheng have entered the optimal harvesting period. Farmers across the county are seizing the opportunity to pick walnuts at the right time. In 2025, the total walnut planting area remains at 640,000 mu, with both quality and yield showing significant improvement over the previous year. The total output is expected to reach 150,000 tons, an increase of 2,700 tons from last year. The estimated output value of the primary industry is 1.6 billion RMB, a 3% year-on-year growth.
During the harvesting period, agricultural technicians from both county and township levels have been dispatched to the fields to guide farmers in grading and categorizing walnuts by variety, ensuring maximum returns for growers. Additionally, active efforts have been made to connect local walnut purchasing enterprises and cooperatives to help farmers expand their sales channels. By promoting graded, categorized, and variety-based sales, the county aims to sustain income growth for farmers while enhancing their sense of happiness and satisfaction.
With abundant sunshine and a temperate climate, Xinjiang provides ideal conditions for walnut growth, ensuring high-quality produce from the source. Compared to other major walnut-producing regions in China, Xinjiang walnuts are known for their large size, plump kernels, superior quality, high yield, and strong stress resistance. After nearly 60 years of development, Xinjiang has cultivated nationally renowned premium varieties. The three main production regions—Aksu Prefecture, Kashgar Prefecture, and Hotan Prefecture—primarily grow superior varieties such as
“Xin2 Walnut,” “Wen
185 Walnut,” “
33 Walnut,” and “
Xingfu Walnut.” The thin-shelled “Wen
185 Walnut Inshell” produced in Wensu County, Aksu, has been awarded the title of “China’s Famous Fruit” and is recognized as a product with distinctive Chinese characteristics. It features large nuts, thin shells that are easy to crack, high oil content, and full, large kernels, giving it significant advantages in both appearance and nutritional quality.
