Chinese walnuts typically ripen and become available around August to September each year. The exact timing depends on the variety and region.
In the major walnut-producing areas of northern China (e.g., Hebei, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Xinjiang etc.), walnuts are usually harvested from late August to mid-September. In southern China (e.g., Yunnan, Sichuan etc.), due to warmer temperatures, walnut harvesting occurs slightly earlier than in the north (approximately 1-2 weeks earlier). According to reports, fresh walnuts have now entered the picking period across Yunnan, and local fresh walnuts have been listed in large quantities.
At high altitudes, due to lower average temperatures, walnut harvesting should be delayed appropriately, with mid-September being the most appropriate. The ripening time difference between early-maturing and late-maturing walnut varieties is approximately 10-25 days.
Within the same region, walnuts grown in the plains ripen earlier than in the mountains, walnuts on sunny slopes ripen earlier than on shady slopes, and walnuts in drought years ripen earlier than in rainy years.

What are the Signs of Walnut Ripeness?
Determining Walnuts Harvest Timing:
Mature walnuts show the following signs. The outer green skin of ripe walnuts changes its color to yellowish green or light yellow, and the velvet becomes less, and the top of some walnuts appears to be cracked, and the green skin is easy to be peeled off. The kernels of walnuts are full and plump, and the walnuts fall off easily when gently tapped with a bamboo pole.
Impact of Harvest Time on Walnut Quality:
If the harvesting time is too early, the walnuts are not fully ripe and fullness is not enough, which makes the harvesting more difficult and the yield lower. In addition, the harvested walnut green skin is not easy to fall off, poor taste, walnut kernel is not full, kernel yield and oil content rate is low, the flavor is not good, and is not resistant to storage, the quality is far less than the mature walnut.Harvesting Too Late (Overripe):
Harvest time is too late, walnuts are too ripe and a large number of fruit drop phenomenon, and the fruit falls on the ground without timely picking, easy to cause mold, ultimately leading to a decline in walnut yield.

In summary, the ripening and picking period for fresh walnuts primarily spans August to October. The specific timing must be determined based on local climatic conditions and walnut varieties. We are now entering the critical period for walnut maturity. As a leading Chinese walnut exporter, Hebei Huadai Group is closely monitoring the ripening and harvest progress. Our walnut processing plants are fully prepared to harvest, process and store walnuts to ensure high quality, nutritious walnuts for consumers around the world.
